Four restaurant chains have recently closed some of its locations in the Dayton region — resulting in 12 restaurants permanently closed and two others expected to reopen.

From Frisch’s Big Boy and Wendy’s to TGI Fridays and Hardee’s, here’s what we know today about these closures:

Frisch’s Big Boy🍴

Fans of Frisch's often share a love for the restaurant's Big Boy hamburgers, onion rings, and selection of pies. Some customers also rave about the nugget-style ice served in each of the restaurant's soft drinks. AIMEE HANCOCK/STAFF

At least nine Frisch’s Big Boy locations have closed in recent months throughout the Dayton region. This includes:

  • 1095 S. Main St., Englewood
  • 8154 Old Troy Pike, Huber Heights
  • 2861 Wilmington Pike, Kettering
  • 1330 Columbus Ave., Lebanon
  • 8181 Springboro Pike, Miami Twp.
  • 3560 S. Dixie Highway, Middletown
  • 1831 N. Bechtle Ave., Springfield
  • 20 Troy Town Drive, Troy
  • 38 W. Main St., Xenia

It was reported on Nov. 18 that two Frisch’s Restaurant Inc. executives, Don Short and Cheryl White, are leading a buyout of “select” locations from the company’s Atlanta-based owner.

“We are very grateful and extremely excited to have the opportunity to carry this beloved icon forward,” Short said in a press release. “Some Frisch’s units are no longer viable. However, other units are well situated to move forward, and we plan to invest in those locations and add new units in the years ahead.”

The press release doesn’t specify which stores will stay open due to the sale, but hints at the difficulties faced by nonviable locations.

“The company has made efforts to negotiate a resolution for all the viable units to stay open permanently, or at least through the holidays, to save thousands of employees’ jobs and benefits, but to no avail,” said the release.

Hardee’s🍴

The Hardee’s restaurants at 4010 Colonel Glenn Highway in Fairborn and 7508 Brandt Pike in Huber Heights are “temporarily closed,” according to information online.

Cox First Media stopped by the Fairborn location and it appears to be undergoing a remodel. The inside looks to be getting a facelift and a new ordering screen sits behind the older one on the outside of the restaurant.

CKE Restaurant Holdings, the parent company of Hardee’s, announced a systemwide plan to overhaul their restaurants in 2022, according to Nation’s Restaurant News. The article states that the company planned to spend $60 million on a “brand transformation” to include new digital menu boards, equipment and streamlined menus.

Hardee’s first opened in Greenville, North Carolina in 1960. Today, the fast-food chain has more than 1,800 restaurants across the U.S.

Other locations in the region include 2500 Needmore Road in Dayton, 2217 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd. in Dayton and 8209 N. Springboro Pike in Miamisburg.

The last TGI Fridays in the Dayton region closed its doors in November after the chain filed for bankruptcy protection as it was looking for ways to “ensure the long-term viability” of the casual dining brand.

The restaurant was located at 2799 Centre Drive in Beavercreek, just off of North Fairfield Road.

The Falcons Group, the franchisee of the restaurant, was formed in 2018 with the acquisition of 16 TGI Fridays locations in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. As of today, the franchisee has 10 TGI Fridays, according to the group’s website.

Rohit Manocha, executive chairman of TGI Fridays Inc., said in a statement that the “primary driver of our financial challenges resulted from COVID-19 and our capital structure.”

TGI Fridays Inc. owns and operates 39 restaurants in the U.S. A separate entity, TGI Fridays Franchisor, owns the intellectual property and has franchised the brand to 56 independent owners in 41 countries.

“All of these franchise locations, both domestic and international, are independently owned and therefore not included in TGI Fridays Inc.’s Chapter 11 process,” a release from TGI Fridays Inc. states.

The closest TGI Fridays to the Dayton region include: 7656 Cox Lane in West Chester or 3719 Stone Creek Blvd. in Cincinnati.

Two Wendy’s locations in the Dayton region have closed its doors after the fast-food chain announced last month it would close 140 U.S. restaurants before the end of this year.

While closures of underperforming stores are expected, the company said in its earnings call they are part of a plan to open between 200 and 300 new restaurants.

“Our focus is on building new restaurants because we know they deliver well over the average of these poor-performing restaurants,” Wendy’s President and CEO Kirk Tanner said. “We, overall, want the best restaurants for the customers and that customer experience we want to deliver.”

The restaurants at 4465 Indian Ripple Road in Beavercreek near The Greene and 2948 Miamisburg Centerville Road in Miami Twp. near the Dayton Mall are closed. Both restaurants are no longer listed on Wendy’s website.

According to Wendy’s website, the chain has 401 locations in Ohio.
